I got a call from a nice guy that does SEO and builds sites and runs at least one forum... he called to see if I was interested in a pretty low-budget client lead, and it turns out it's about average for the projects that I do [Note to self: double prices by next year...no, double now and triple by next year...]. Since I sometimes get in some larger or more fussy projects than I like, I will refer them to him.
We chatted and shared some information about SEO stuff, which was nice for both of us, since we seemed to be at about the same level of knowledge, although our methods are not exactly the same. But the thing we both agreed upon right away is that there are still a bunch of ego-ridden people in this industry that have attitudes that the world would be better off without having around. The real killer is that many of them write articles and spout opinions that those of us with different backgrounds, like programming, know are not accurate, or just plain WRONG.
No wonder most of the potential clients are so confused and gunshy....
So I think what we need is a real, honest to [deity of choice] Professional Search Engine Optimization Association! So I'm thinking about starting one, wanna join? Dues? Uh, well, none to start with. I think we just need a framework to organize this goddamn mess we call an industry. We need to figure out what needs to be standardized, what should be standardized, what might be standardized. We need a inexpensive or free educational system for new SEOs also.
This would NOT be just for SEOs either, we need to get the owners and programmers of search engines and directories involved as well. Why the hell should I have to spend 6-8 hours to hand submit our client projects to 120 systems, when most of them all want exactly the same information? Why can't I just fill out one form with everything and have the systems take what they want and leave the rest.
Yeah, that DOES sound like a submission program, but there are problems with those. A system that was verified and certified could work if there were incentives for the systems to accept the information provided to the SE and DIR.
So what do you think? Is it possible? Does anyone else care? If so, write to me at christian@nielsentech.com and let me know.
