Just a quick not about something that just happened that I need to write about... most of you know how much I hate spam, well I was just spammed by www. cyber- robotics. com. I have spread the URL out because I don't want them to gain any benefit of having yet anouther link from a site that may have some real value.

These are the people that sell Zeus, the spam and link-requesting software. Here, I'll let you read their message:

Hi.

I just visited your website ( www.NielsenTech.com ) and really enjoyed it :-)
I wonder if you would like to trade links. Our Link Partners receive preferential treatment with a listing at the TOP of each Theme page, a Link Partner graphic, bold print, etc. They also receive a lot more traffic than our regular listings.

I have already added your website's listing to:
http: // www. cyber -robotics .com/ links/ index.html
on this page http: // www. cyber- robotics. com/ links/ websitepromotion.html
You will be able to see it when I upload the directory later today.

It would be nice if you would put a link to us on your site :-)
I've found that reciprocal links are the best way to increase traffic to a web site. Besides more visitors from the links, the Search Engines give more importance to web sites having lots of links to them. We will both benefit if we have links to each other's web sites.

Please Email me and let me know what you decide.

Thank you in advance,

Here is a link to useful information and a banner you could use to add my website's link to your website:
http :// www. cyber- robotics. com/ links/ addalink.html
or you can use the link info below.

Perhaps you would like to Join our team of Distributors. We pay up to 50% of retail. Click the link below to find out more.

If you would prefer to be removed from our directory, or moved to another Theme, please let me know.

---------- ( Reciprocal Link Generator) ----------
will visit the kind of websites you choose, organize your ThemeSites and manage your reciprocal link email efforts. He then creates your Link Directory, giving preferential treatment to your Link Partners. Using FTP he uploads your web site's Link Directory to your web site.
It couldn't be easier!

I got a call from a nice guy that does SEO and builds sites and runs at least one forum... he called to see if I was interested in a pretty low-budget client lead, and it turns out it's about average for the projects that I do [Note to self: double prices by next year...no, double now and triple by next year...]. Since I sometimes get in some larger or more fussy projects than I like, I will refer them to him.

We chatted and shared some information about SEO stuff, which was nice for both of us, since we seemed to be at about the same level of knowledge, although our methods are not exactly the same. But the thing we both agreed upon right away is that there are still a bunch of ego-ridden people in this industry that have attitudes that the world would be better off without having around. The real killer is that many of them write articles and spout opinions that those of us with different backgrounds, like programming, know are not accurate, or just plain WRONG.

No wonder most of the potential clients are so confused and gunshy....

So I think what we need is a real, honest to [deity of choice] Professional Search Engine Optimization Association! So I'm thinking about starting one, wanna join? Dues? Uh, well, none to start with. I think we just need a framework to organize this goddamn mess we call an industry. We need to figure out what needs to be standardized, what should be standardized, what might be standardized. We need a inexpensive or free educational system for new SEOs also.

This would NOT be just for SEOs either, we need to get the owners and programmers of search engines and directories involved as well. Why the hell should I have to spend 6-8 hours to hand submit our client projects to 120 systems, when most of them all want exactly the same information? Why can't I just fill out one form with everything and have the systems take what they want and leave the rest.

Yeah, that DOES sound like a submission program, but there are problems with those. A system that was verified and certified could work if there were incentives for the systems to accept the information provided to the SE and DIR.

So what do you think? Is it possible? Does anyone else care? If so, write to me at christian@nielsentech.com and let me know.

You may or may not know it, but Google has some new ad formats for those of us that use AdSense. I peeked at the new formats, but I'm not sure if I'll use them. I know they will fit right in with the design of some sites, but what I need is something between the 2-ad banner style and the new 4-across "leader board" style that is new.

I think they should have a 3-across format. I think that would fit better and of course, there is more power in the number "3". But what they SHOULD do, is just let us enter in some parameters into the code and format a block, a list, skyscraper, leaderboard, or whatever we want within certain parameters...

P.S. By the way, thanks to whoever rang the Blog Bell the other day. I'm not sure if it's really pointless or not, but it's the first web gizmo that I thought up myself as an original thing... but I'm thinking a Blog Guest Book might be a better idea...

Nutch: about

Just found out about a new search engine project that you may be interested in. The following is taken from a newsletter by Axandra.com that just came in this morning:

Nutch aims to provide a transparent alternative to commercial web search engines on an open source basis. Its idea is that only open source search results can be fully trusted to be without bias.

"All of the existing search engines have secret methods for deciding which documents are the best documents," said lead architect Doug Cutting, "Search is something that's a basic need for users of the Internet. People have the right to know how their search engine works, so they can trust it."

Nutch wants to promote public access to search technology without commercial bias by providing free high-quality search software and its source code to the public and by facilitating ongoing research and development of search technology in a public forum.

A public demo isn't available yet but the idea behind this project looks very promising. The Nutch board of directors includes popular people like Tim O'Reilly (O'Reilly computer books), Peter Savich (Overture research) and Mitchell Kapor (co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation).

Seopros.org Search Engine Optimization Organization and SEO consultants directory

I can't say too much about www.Seopros.org! I'm hearing great things are in store for the SEO industry from this previously low-key organization. I see that there is another group that has some pretty big industry player that have formed a new professional group, but it's focus is SEM, not SEO!

Now I ask you, what is going to change more quickly, and possibly beyond all current recognition, SEO or SEM? That's right, SEM will. Why? Because SEO does not have the same "greed factor" working on it that SEM has. I'm not talking about the SEM's that do the work, although there is some greed there, no, I'm talking about the affiliates and the PPC systems themselves.

PPC SERP or SLURP does not have the same integrity that SEO-driven SE results has. Even when you factor in the spammers, it's still better than PPC. At least SE results is based on good old fashion spam and not who has the biggest budget. Hey, spam is not simple if it's effective. It takes a lot of thought and work. Just because it's the devil's work is not an issue at the moment. I don't advocate or practice spam, but I can still respect the work and sometimes creativity that goes into it...

Anyway, look to seopros.org to bring some order out of the Chaos that is SEO. If you are an SEO professional and are not a member, you are missing out on leads from their free RFP system. And you you are looking to get some SEO work done, what better way than to put out a Request For Proposal (bids) to have the work done, and get back a number of bids from qualified companies?

Look for www.seopros.org to be an important center of the SEO and search engine industry in the near future. Yes, it's going to be important for search engines also, but I can't reveal the details yet (Not that anyone reads this blog anyway.... but just in case...!).

We are finally going to see something of a convergence with the SE industry and the SEO industry at long last...!!!

Thanks for all the cards and letters! Your use of postal mail has made a big difference. We are now using a new mailserver so feel free to return to using email. The new system should have no problems handling whatever you can throw at it.

I'd like to announce that the winner in our July contest was Terry Silverstein, of Cohoes, N.Y. Terry wins the 21 inch CRT monitor, the silver micro-mouse I bought in Japan last February, and a used copy of NetObjects Fusion MX. Runner-up Robert Swaggie will be getting the NielsenTech.com Polo shirt and $50 a site optimization or site submission of his choice.

We are going to suspend the contest until the Fall. If you would like to be notified when you enter again, just drop us an email and we'll put you on the mailing list.
