Another day, another blog entry... today was sunny and cold in Minneapolis. The mail arrived early, so I was glad I put some letters out early so the postman could pick them up. I had a number of new clients call, one sells specialized software (HIPPA?) for human resource departments, and one is a law firm in Dubai! Dubai is in the middle East, U.A.E. and I admit to needing a map to tell you exactly where that is. But this is one of the things I love about having my own company and being contacted by people from all over the world. I just had a meeting with a man from India.

I have made some mistakes in the past, as hard as that may be to believe, and I will make new mistakes in the future. It is my goal and great hope that I do not repeat past mistakes again. One of the first SEO projects I took on for a paying client was for a fairly large site that sells artwork. To make a long story short, the staff of the company did not implement my work correctly and the results of the project were a disappointment to the client, who I discovered was expected much more than I ever said I would deliver. The client was only willing to pay me $400 of a $1,200 project, but I told the client that if he was NOT satisfied, that I did not want any money from him.

Since that time, my #1 priority is to set the client's expectations. If they want top placements in a search engine, I offer to help them find someone. I know from working on over 45 projects in the past two years that I can increase qualified traffic to a client's site by 2-4 times what it was before, and that is a conservative estimate. I also know that unless the site should change, or people use different terms to search with, that the traffic will remain fairly constant and not need monthly or quarterly updates.

I take time with clients and have patience in answering their questions. I do extensive keyword research and optimize the site in a manner that is consistent with good results that have been proven on almost all of the past projects. While some may nit-pick about this or that, the truth is that I have proved to myself and my clients that I do good work and think about their interests first in what I do. To me, that is the most powerful and most effective way to do business that involves working with other people. There are lines of work where you can indulge in greed and self-interest, but that generally does not work well in a service business.

I used to think that the world of business was the complete opposite of any kind of spiritual life. I now know that was incorrect. A spiritual life and be lived in any situation where the self and be given a back seat.

The search industry is changing. If you are too close, you will miss the signs. Some things lately have caused me to step back and take a look around and I'm picking up on some new directions that I think will become mainstream.

The idea behind GRUB, for example. Makes perfect sense, but I just tried to load it on my home PC and I could not get it to run as I did at the last job I had. This concept needs to be open source and the results publicly available.

The Search Industry needs to change, and I don't know how that will happen, but I feel certain that it will. It is not in balance and in nature, things out of balance seek to become balanced.

December sucks more that we like to admit... we're all susposed to be happy and stuff, but the truth is most of us are stressed out.

It's probably a good idea for everyone to take a deep breath and think about what is really important in life and not sweat the small stuff...

Whew...! It must be the season... I just ticked someone off by trying to be nice over at one of the forums I moderate at... Guy posts and ad for his software and I inform him that it is not appropriate and just removed the link and not the entire post, so if anyone happend to care they could contact him... then I ask a couple of questions and offer some suggestions, because I figure he's serious, and he flames me in return...?

Another moderator deleted the post, but I got a copy via email, so I was able to read it. What's funny is he says I don't know anything about SEO.... yet he has to post ads to sell his software... it makes no sense to me, but what are you going to do....?

It seems that a site that I have long admired is now being a little reasonable. seoconsultants.com has just issued a message stating that they feel it is not appropriate for SEO consultants to have Google AdSense advertising on our sites.

It is true that some of the ads do promote SEO services that are what I would consider less than professional, but that is not under my control, and visitors should have the option to choose from whatever ads, be they rip-offs or some of the largest SEO firms in the world if they choose to do so. I figure if they check out those bad sites, it will make us look better. If they look at another professional site, well let's just say I have no fear of any other SEO firm...

It's one thing to promote good practices and standards, it's another to attack the First Amendment...

Here is the message that I just received:

Good day SEO Consultants Directory members. It has come to our attention that some of you may be running Google AdSense on your primary SEO/SEM pages. Unfortunately the ads being served from AdSense may be in violation of items #7 and #17 of our Submission Guidelines.

We will be making directory sweeps over the next 30-90 days at which time anyone running AdSense on SEO/SEM pages will be removed from our directory. Many of the companies that have not been approved for a listing in our directory may be part of the AdSense network. This puts you in clear violation of items #7 and #17 of our Submission Guidelines.

Also, for those of you who have failed to heed our prior notices on keeping your Consultants Profiles up to date, we will be removing those members who have not updated their profile in the last 120 days. We will be installing a new feature which will automatically remove your listing if there is a 120 day lapse in Profile Updates. This insures that your listing remains fresh and tells us that you are still alive and have an interest in maintaining your listing with the directory.

There will be no further notices sent when it comes to removing members who are in violation of the above issues. Our Editors will be reviewing sites periodically over the next 30-90 days and will remove members without notice if they find AdSense and/or no profile update in the past 120 days.

Thanks to everyone who continues to support the directory. For those of you celebrating the holidays, we wish you a safe and Happy Holiday!

And here is my reply:

Dear Mr. Lewis,

If you insist that you must follow this policy on Google AdSense, then you may remove my listing at once.

I appreciate the listing that was provided and wish you the best of luck in the future.

One day a whole roomful of General Electric's most expensive machinery went out of order. By this time Steinmetz had retired, but the company's baffled engineers called him back as a consultant. Steinmetz ambled from machine to machine, taking a measurement here, scribbling something in his notebook there.

After about an hour, he took out a large piece of chalk and marked a large 'X' on the casing of one machine. Workers pried off the casing and found the problem at once. But when the company executives got Steinmetz's bill for $10,000, they were reluctant to pay it. "This seems a bit excessive for one chalk mark," Steinmetz was told. "Perhaps you'd better itemize your charges." Within a few days, they received the following itemized bill: Making one chalk mark $1.00 Knowing where to make one chalk mark $9,999.00"

Yawn, yet another SEO geek writing about SEO news, http://www.search-marketing.info/blog/blogger.html.

However, this one should be on your list to visit... at first look, it's pretty good, like what ChriSEO offers (no relation or connection).

The first rule of a good webmaster / web designer is....what?

That's right! Test your links before you publish you pages....!

Thank fo Alan for letting me know that most of the links in my last post did NOT work and were NOT tested....

I should test my work for myself as well as I test my work for my clients....!

Let's see.... what kind of self-promotion can I post about today...? Oh right, I know!

How would you like to help put us out of business? Well, we are making it easy for you. You may be aware that we optimize web sites for clients and then submit those sites to search engines. We are now insane and GIVING AWAY our huge hand search engine submission system to anyone that would like to do the SEO or search engine optimization on their own site and then use our search engine submission list to submit the site for free!

You can find the list on our site at: www.NielsenTech.com/links.cfm(fixed!). Not content to just give it away, you can use it on the site, or download it in 5 DIFFERENT FORMATS and use pretty much anyway you want. The search engine list is available in

HTML - to use on your PC if you don't want to hang out on our site and have all your submissions go from our site to the search engines which would impress them to no end,

Excel - so you can track when and where you submit your site, which is what we do,

dBASE and ASCII - for those that want to import the list and would rather NOT type the whole thing in, and as an

HTML Include file - so you can add the main part of the submission list to your site and update it every month without doing any coding.

You can use the list, but if you publish it, we do ask that you give us credit and have a link to our site, so other people can also snag a copy.

We had been maintaining a search engine and submission list for quite a while and I asked several sites if they would share their list if us and all refused! So we kept on working on the list and finally decided, hey, let's been the coolest site with a list like this and GIVE IT AWAY, since no one else will!

This search engine list has about 1,000 sites and most are search engines and directories. For most sites you will only submit to about 120-160 different sites, and you can expect that to take you a couple of weeks, depending on how fast you can type. If you want to hire us to do the submissions for you, it will cost $480 currently (subject to change without notice, visit www.nielsentech.com/services.cfm for current prices).

If you have site suggestions for the list or any problems, please let us know. If you would like this information in a special format for your site, please just ask.

I have just completed a Blog entry on our free hand search engine and directory submission system, free search engine list, and submit url SE list for all to see. With it you can submit site, do a free site submission, submit web site, add urls, and make site suggestions.

Well, the BSE Blogging Survey results have finally been calculated and here is a preview of the results.

Full results are posted on
http://blog.blogsearchengine.com/index.php?p=92

** Blog Ownership:
While most bloggers only own one blog, a large amount, 43.8%, own more than one blog.

21% of all bloggers surveyed own three blogs or more.

** Online Activity:
Bloggers are quite active online, 52.8% of all bloggers surveyed update their blogs atleast once a day.

** Blogging in the workplace:
While most bloggers do not blog only at work (only 4.8% do), 53% of those bloggers surveyed do blog in the workplace (at work, or at both home and work).

Not great news for employeers, but good to know that you bloggers sneaking an entry on company time are not alone!

** Advertising on Blogs:
Only 13.4% of the bloggers surveyed run advertising in their blogs.
58.5% of bloggers who do not run advertising on their blog claim that the reason is because they do not want advertising or feel that advertising does not belong on blogs.

50.6% of all bloggers surveyed are not open to running advertising on their blogs.

** Public Relations:

An overwhelming amount of bloggers, 90.7%, have never been contacted by a company or organization with product or service information, asking the blogger to blog about them. This may be because the public relations industry has yet to direct a large amount of its efforts towards bloggers.

Although the majority of bloggers have yet to be contacted by a company or organization with blogging info related to a product or service, 73.9% off all bloggers are open to receiving and blogging about such information. This is in vast contrast to advertising where only 29.4% of all bloggers surveyed are open to running ads (run advertisements or would like to).

However, 41.8% of bloggers may be open to PR contacts, but are willing to post a negative review in their blog if they do not like the product.

The PR industry has to be extra careful with bloggers by first reading their material, likes and dislikes, and then, pitching product or service information customized to the blogger.

Bloggers are more open to public relations efforts than the are for running advertising.

** Publishing of this information **
