I don't often post to other sites, but this one's worth it:
Off the rack gift cards - newest scam target
The article describes how you can buy a gift card from a display at a store and how scammers can steal some or all of the money from the card before the card is used for the first time. It doesn't sound possible, but once you read this you will understand how it can be done. And more scammers than ever may be doing this once the information is out there. The article mentions ways to protect yourself.

People are coming up with ways to steal every day. I'm not surprised by the gift card theft.

I'm not surprised either with gift card theft. Seems like it would be a pretty easy way to get quick money, not saying that I support it at all.

I work for technical support of plastic card in a bank and the stuff you have described is clear for me. The security of plastic cards improve, but still you should be aware of what is going on with your card. The main problem with plastic cards is that many PS terminals can not identify bank intent, in this case you may have hold amount, and have problems to get the sum back. But it's technical issue, not scammers' one.

You would think that with all the effort they put into stealing they could just find a legit way to make a living. Is it just more fun to come up with ways to steal? You would think so by looking at the amount of work that goes into identity theft as opposed to just thinking up a legal way to get money. Now we all have to live in a state of paranoia.
